I  belong to an 8 part harmony group and part of a women’s quartet and I purchased a Digital Voice Recorder this year.  With this new recorder you can upload your practice music to the computer and then to a CD (still working on the CD) but as I was working on my music in front of the computer I clicked “whats playing” instead of the library and what a surprise I had.  The music and vocal were making wonderful patterns and colors on the screen – got out the camera and started taking pictures.  This is what I got.

Art at the La Brea Tar Pits April 12, 2009

Just returned from LA and Palm Springs and one of the stops we made was the Page Museum in LA.  This is a museum built on the old rancho of La Brea and became known as the La Brea Tar Pits.  They have been doing digs there since the 1920’s and have a wonderful collection in the museum.  They have a higher number of fossils due to the rapid coverage of the asphalt tar.  If your in the area do stop in and see nature at work.  This history lesson started about 38,000 years ago.

The center animal is a Yesterday Camel.

They have a Columbian Mammoth, many bird, found 1 person plus many other animals.  It is a fascinating place.

Had to get to work when I returned – did my Whisper Challenge plus a couple of pieces that I have been playing with.

Class with Ana Lisa Hedstrom – Shibori March 17, 2009

Filed under: working art — sandrasart @ 8:15 pm

To start we have added a girl to the family – Olivia – 7lbs 10 oz, 19.25 inches born on Wed. March 11.    10 minutes old.

But I spent a wonderful 2 days with Ana Lisa in a shibori workshop.  There were 13 of us in the class – weavers, quilters, and garment makers.  Level from beginning to intermediate.  We used Procion mx dyes and acid dyes.  We pole wrapped, stitched, clamped and used a smocking pleater.  Fabrics were cotton, silks, raw silk, bamboo with spandex and rayon.  Ana Lisa’s knowledge is great and she shares the history of the Japanese art and the masters who do the work.

The fabric on the pole is cotton and has been wrapped and twisted as it was compresses then painted with the thicken Procion dye – it was washed and dried then rewrapped in the other direction to be re-painted with the thickened dye.polescarf

The scarf to the right is 8mm silk that has been folded from the right side to the center them basted – this was repeated on the left side.  It was then wrapped on the pole and twisted – painted with the thickened dye.  All the pieces that were done with the thickened dye were wrapped in plastic and cured overnight (24 hours is better) we then washed and dried them – then pressed them.  By pleating the scarf  then pole wrapping you get the chevron design.

The next group that we worked with was the stitching and clamping.  We took the raw silk, cotton, bamboo and stitched designs on the fabric then pull the thread up as tight as you could without breaking it then tied it in a knot tight to the fabric.  The silk fabrics were then simmered in a pot of acid dye for an hour or so.

The pattern above is the bamboo and spandex – folded and stitched and pulled up tight – that was dyed in the Procion dye in a cool pot.  The piece to the right is on raw silk and was folded and stitched then pulled up forming a starburst.  This one was simmered in the acid dye on the stove.

The work below was done on the smocking pleater – the fabric is raw silk gauze and had been fed through the pleater on the diagonal.  After the fabric was rolled out of the pleater we pulled the threads up and tied off.  This was  also done in the acid dye.

The last piece I am putting up to share is silk broadcloth that had been dyed yellow.  It was folded in accordion folds then a threefold accordion fold then stitched on the sewing machine.  Then dyed.  What a fun-filled 2 days.

SAQA 12″ Square Auction February 17, 2009

Filed under: Finished work — sandrasart @ 11:05 pm

Living in California – the land of the sun – it has been snowing since Tuesday night (now it is Tuesday of the following week).  I realize for many this is nothing but for Californians it can be really messy.  BUT I have been working on some of my hand dyed fabrics and adding additional surface design work.  I finished a number of pieces that are ready for stitching but wanted to share the one for SAQA’s auction.  It was dyed, several colors of paint were stamped on it – then I used the brayer, blue and green metallic paints.12in1  I received a great fabric post card today that had been snow dyed – so since I have snow I shall try some of that.

Hand Dyed Fabric January 21, 2009

I have been cutting out some garments and working on a quilt.  While picking a lining I came across silk pieces that I had dyed and thought I would put them on here for you to see.  They are complex cloth and are china silk and silk crepe.  I used procion dye, dyed and overdyed, metallic paints, stamping and silk screening.  They are all 2 plus yards and do make great linings.

Merry Christmas December 24, 2008

Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season.  Have been enjoying the off and on snow in our mountains for the last 2 week but do hope to be able to get the our daughters for Christmas.  I plan to do better keeping my blog update in 2009 – I have backed out of many things this years and plan to devote more time to the art.  I have been spending time playing with surface design and plan to do more Shibori this year.

This is my 2008 Bernina Fashion Garment – It is made of black, fushia, gold and hand dyed silks.  Metallic threads, gold beads and crystals.  The pattern for the leaves came from my oak trees.  I enjoyed working on it and was thrilled to see it on the runway  in Houston.

I have also been working with Lutador and making Bark post cards.  It was painted with a number of transparent paints then sprayed with gold glitter- when dry I used the heat gun and burned holes in the base fabric.  Stitched yarn and then stitched rows of thread to show knot holes in the bark.

Enjoy it is fun to let go and play.

Hi again February 18, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — sandrasart @ 3:20 am

Been out of the loop for a while and this is probably not the time to write again since I am getting ready to leave for 3 months but here goes.  have been working on my garment for the Bernina Fashion show in Houston and must have it done before I leave for Africa in March.  Have not done much in the spirit of art quilts but have some teaching set up for my return in June.

Have been making post cards for exchange. house1.jpg  holly1.jpg

Houston November 10, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — sandrasart @ 4:17 pm

I spent 5 wonderful days in Houston with great friends.  If you have not been there it is a must.  The party begins with the preview night for members and registered participants – then all you can see vendors and quilts.  My roommate Bev was new to Houston this year and was in wonder by Friday morning she had made her reservation as my roommate for 2008.  Took pictures of my piece for the final Journal Project and the one from the book.  Will post as they come out of the camera.

The other and most exciting thing that happened was the invitation that came from the Bernina Fashion Show to be a designer for 2008.  Have gotten the fabric, idea and ready to go.

Have now wound down – back to laundry etc – and time to get back to work.  Flower challenge done now on to Post Cards that are due by the end of December.

 Talk with you soon.  Sandy

Welcome October 28, 2007

Filed under: Finished work — sandrasart @ 5:28 am

Welcome to my world – it consists of husband, daughters, grandchildren, one 10 month old Golden Retriever named Isabella, traveling and golf.  My passion is hand dyeing fabrics, art quilts and art garments.  I love color and random piecing – I like to see a design develop as I sew and cut – I also like the raw edge applique using free form method and finding fun things to use in or on the fabric.  My latest piece has deer fencing incorporated into it.  I use beads, leather, silks, cotton plus other good thing.

Living in the mountains in Northern California offer a lot of inspiration and sometimes gives a challenge as to how to give the impression of what my mind sees.  Here is one of my new pieces.

finland.jpg

Glorious Seasons in 26″ x 29″ and is made using the raw edge method.  I used beads, mostly hand dyed cottons, leather and black canvas.  It traveled to Finland for a gallery show in June and had to fit into a 27″x18″ suitcase and could only be folded once.  It presently is hanging in a gallery in a local winery.

Have a couple of new pieces but need to take pictures so will add more soon.  Bye for now.  Sandy
